Today the students began working on their Inquiry Charts. This requires students to ask questions, reflect on their background knowledge before reading and then reading to research their questions. We've been learning that strong readers read to confirm their background knowledge, change misconceptions or to learn something completely new! I was impressed with the teamwork of the research teams overall! Teamwork was also needed when we got started on our presentation boards painting a blue sky background for our Savanna setting. If your kids came home with blue paint on them today now you know why!! I promise it's washable :) It was fun to make memories as a classroom family, the kids said I had a classroom filled with blue smurfs!

Students have had many opportunities this week to learn about animals and living things within different habitats! On Wednesday the Museum of Science came and did a habitat presentation with LIVE animals! It was a wonderful experience overall and the kids asked lots of great questions. Today, students began to delve into their research of animals. Each student was able to choose an animal from our habitat, the Savanna Grasslands. Children are reading in "research teams" and taking notes to answer questions about their animal such as where it lives, how it protects itself and how it cares for its young. The completed finished products will be presented at our Habitat Happening (more info to come next week!) Below please find a video of our classroom doing Number Talks: a mental math fluency block which helps students build foundational understanding and efficient math strategies for solving problems! This video was taken by Mrs. Vigna as an example of a Number Talks lesson for the Coach's Corner on the MPS website! Bravo to our mathematicians for showing and explaining their thinking!! Today was an exciting day to be a student at the Henry B. Burkland school! Our day was filled with fun activities and crafts, guest reader Firefighter Joe, storybook characters walking through the hallways and of course READING! Read Across America day was a huge success and it was wonderful to take a day and truly remember just how much FUN reading can be! |
