Students got a chance to practice voting in our mock election this afternoon! We read Doreen Cronin's book Duck for President which introduces the process of voting and the presidential election! Students got to show their HBB voter registration cards and cast their votes on a ballot in our voting booth! Students elected Duck for President with a strong majority but students had a great time learning about the importance of voting!

Today's festivities included reading Halloween poems with our fancy witch fluency fingers, writing about our Halloween experiences and estimating how many seeds were inside of our pumpkin! Overall we had a busy and full day of Halloween learning and fun! ☺️🎃 Students had a great time exploring exhibits at the Museum of Science! The show we saw at the planetarium was a very cool look at the Solar System and beyond! It was a great day full of fun and discovery! Stories came to life at HBB today during the First Grade Book Character Parade! Students had so much fun dressing up and sharing their reports about their characters! Overall it was a fun Friday morning to celebrate our love of literacy! Today first-graders at the HBB got to learn about fire prevention from firefighter Billy and firefighter Ryan! Mrs. Adams got to try on all the firefighter gear which weighs almost 80 pounds! We also saw the jaws of life in action! Thanks to the Middleboro Fire Department for coming to teach us about fire safety! Today New York Best Selling author and illustrator Brian Lies delivered a great message to our first grade authors! He told the students- pick something you love to do and work hard at it! Students were amazed at his artistic skill, asked great questions about what it's like to be a published author and we're inspired to work hard at writing stories of their own! I went to pick up the students last week and they were ready, in position and wanted to perform for me! Mrs. Michaels did a great job and the kiddos were awesome listeners! Thought you would enjoy hearing our small symphony!
Today during Writer's Workshop we learned that once you think you're done, you've only just begun! As authors we are writing personal narratives- the real stories of our lives! I have been blown away by the creativity and hard work that the students have put into their writing so far! We learned how real authors go back MANY times and add more details to their pictures and words! Rough drafts of completed stories should be ready for parents and families to see during Open House! In the first weeks of school we spend lots of time setting up our readers workshop. Students learn the structure of readers workshop, how our classroom library works, and of course they spend lots of time reading! In the midst of listening to these young readers I was able to capture a few pictures that show our excitement and interest in books. They have been doing a fantastic job during their independent reading and they love to share what they're reading with their partners during share time. Ask your child about what they've been reading in readers workshop this week! We are off to a great start this year in first grade! The day seemed to fly by but we learned lots of routines, rules and read many stories! By the end of the day the first day jitters were gone and the students couldn't wait to come back the next day! Thankful for a great group of little learners! |
