As we are getting ready to do some persuasive writing, we spent the week studying author's craft and how real author's persuade their readers. During this lesson, it was the students turn to give persuasion a try! Each group of students were given two choices some of which were "What would you rather have: Longer lunch or longer recess, A bike or a skateboard?" and "What do you think is better? Winter or summer? Gym or art? Dogs or cats?" Students were then placed into groups in which they had to state their opinion. The challenge was that each group had to come to a consensus on which choice was better, so students had to come up with powerful reasons to try and persuade their classmates to think like them! After the groups had come to an agreement, they went off to write their opinions with two supporting reasons. Then they were able to share their opinions with the class with a buddy and then a whole class share. They continue to amaze me with their conversations, creativity and super ideas! In Topic 4 we have been working on addition and subtraction strategies to make our math more efficient! We did a fun activity to build fact fluency. Every student was given a card with a number, they not only had to find their doubles buddy, but also the sum of the doubles fact! They had fun and did a great job! The day before Halloween was a day filled with LOTS of learning, and we squeezed a little bit of fun in also :) Our day began as we learned that readers read to notice punctuation and read with fluency and expression! Of course, we read our Halloween Sounds poem and Five Little Pumpkins poem with plenty of spooky expression. All week we have been adding information about spiders to our background knowledge. We read many books on spiders and even saw a short video! Friday we made our own spider hats! We talked about safety on Halloween and how we can make smart choices while trick or treating. In the afternoon, we cut open a pumpkin and estimated how wide our pumpkin was using string! All of us guessed too short, even Mrs. Hart! We also made estimations as to how many seeds were in the pumpkin. Although nobody guessed it right on the nose, we did have some very close guesses! Then students got to reach into the pulp and pull out as many seeds as we could! Together we counted ALL (yes, every single one!!!) of the seeds in our pumpkin! 397!!! Overall, we had an awesome fun filled day of learning... The students of Room 28 were so awesome, it was SCARY!!! :) |
