The class book that we wrote together has finally arrived! Students were thrilled to be able to see their work in a real book! "We're famous!" was a common phrase heard this afternoon! I love that students truly view themselves as authors and believe that anything is possible with hard work and effort- even publishing a book! If you did not order a book and would like to, please contact me!
First graders got a hands on experience at Soule Farm Homestead last Thursday! We've been talking about simple machines like levers, pulleys, wheels, wedges, and inclined planes! Students got to see with their eyes and their own two hands how these machines make work easier and faster! We also got to make our own yarn from the wool of sheep! We had a great time- huge thanks to our awesome chaperones for coming along! The first grade team got together today to do something nice for the Middleboro Public Library! We read the story Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed which taught us that one small act of kindness can go a LONG way! Then students decorated bookmarks for people to take and use at the library! The students did a great job making a difference in our community! Our field trip to the New England Aquarium was a great success! The kids had so much fun, got to discover and learn so many new things. Our day began by exploring the outer exhibits like penguins and other fish. We then headed over to the IMAX 3D where we saw Galapagos 3D. The video tied in so well to the habitats that we have been talking about in our previous unit! The children then got to explore the other exhibits like the touch tank and the giant tank! The hammerhead sharks, turtles and sting rays were among class favorites. Overall it was a great day of fun and learning! Thank you to all who came out today to the Habitat Happening! The children were VERY excited to share their research with you! What a wonderful celebration of learning! We hope to see you on Tuesday April 12th at 9:30 AM in our classroom for the Habitat Happening! Today the students began working on their Inquiry Charts. This requires students to ask questions, reflect on their background knowledge before reading and then reading to research their questions. We've been learning that strong readers read to confirm their background knowledge, change misconceptions or to learn something completely new! I was impressed with the teamwork of the research teams overall! Teamwork was also needed when we got started on our presentation boards painting a blue sky background for our Savanna setting. If your kids came home with blue paint on them today now you know why!! I promise it's washable :) It was fun to make memories as a classroom family, the kids said I had a classroom filled with blue smurfs! Students have had many opportunities this week to learn about animals and living things within different habitats! On Wednesday the Museum of Science came and did a habitat presentation with LIVE animals! It was a wonderful experience overall and the kids asked lots of great questions. Today, students began to delve into their research of animals. Each student was able to choose an animal from our habitat, the Savanna Grasslands. Children are reading in "research teams" and taking notes to answer questions about their animal such as where it lives, how it protects itself and how it cares for its young. The completed finished products will be presented at our Habitat Happening (more info to come next week!) Below please find a video of our classroom doing Number Talks: a mental math fluency block which helps students build foundational understanding and efficient math strategies for solving problems! This video was taken by Mrs. Vigna as an example of a Number Talks lesson for the Coach's Corner on the MPS website! Bravo to our mathematicians for showing and explaining their thinking!! |
